I am interested in hiking and camping the Trace yet this fall. Are most of the campgrounds open all year round? Is there a club that backpacks and hikes the Trace?
Thanks!

I believe all primitive campgrounds that connect to the Sheltowee except those in Natural Bridge and Cumberland Falls are open year around. If you were to thru hike in the winter, I doubt the state parks would kick you out if you camped in a primitive spot.
I don't know one person who has thru hiked the entire trail as one trip. The problem is that some sections between major recreation areas are hardtop. Some private property owners, who have large tracks of forested land, want no hikers (equestrians & atvs probably scare property owners more) to pass through thier property. The goal of this site is field verify what's singletrack and what's highway.
So to answer your question....you might enjoy hiking the Sheltowee in stages and take advantage of the many side trails to make a 'grand loop'. As for finding hiking partners, you can leave a note here, or post to http://www.kywilderness.com
Goodluck Packman! Don't forget to post some pix!
Do you have the draft GPS track of the Sheltowee? _________________ Help map trails by submitting your waypoints and trail photos. |

Yes Packman, there is a track file for the entire Sheltowee Trace. It has been 'weeded' so that there is 40 meters between each vertex. Download it in the GPS data section.
Also, ou are welcome to post your data here too! _________________ Help map trails by submitting your waypoints and trail photos. |

Thanks again Boyd for all your help. I hope to get out in the wilds in the next couple of weeks and do a bit of looking around! I also noticed a few Geocaches in and around the area!

There is no doubt that hiking and camping provide exercise and interest for people of any age. Just getting out and walking around is a wonderful way to see nature. Since unexpected things happen, however, the best way to help guarantee a good time for all is to plan ahead carefully and follow commonsense safety precautions. _________________ phentermine for good life |
